Katrina O'Rell

Product Developer · Founder, NovaCore Technologies

I design, build, and operate software products end to end — a live subscription training platform, fleet operations tooling, and educational software. Most of my work centers on helping people learn a skill or a job.

CyberStudyLabs

Live · subscription

A training platform for CompTIA Security+ (SY0-701) preparation and SOC analyst readiness, serving individual subscribers, instructors, and schools.

  • Official CompTIA Delivery Partner — authorized to use CompTIA branding and distribute discounted exam vouchers
  • 25-chapter curriculum with 100 domain-tagged quiz questions, practice exams, flashcards, and a completion certificate — enough material to run a full bootcamp
  • Portfolio Builder where students produce real work samples: incident-response reports, playbooks, and triage logs, persisted to the cloud
  • Instructor dashboard with class codes, rosters, and per-student progress tracking, plus 13 printable student and instructor documents
  • Six-tier access model with live Stripe payments and webhook-driven tier management

Corvia

Live · web platform & driver app

A trucking operations platform that replaces the patchwork of separate tools carriers juggle — compliance, dispatch, safety, HR, maintenance, and training in one connected system. Born from my own daily work in fleet operations.

  • Seven integrated modules covering DQ files and Clearinghouse compliance, dispatch and load management, BOL/EDI, ELD/GPS, fleet maintenance, and CDL driver training
  • Role-based access with stackable module toggles — each company configures exactly what every person can see and do
  • Complete web platform across eight distinct roles, from dispatcher to compliance coordinator to platform IT
  • Companion native driver app live in both the App Store and Google Play
  • Accepted into the Samsara Technology Partnership Program — ELD/GPS integration in development, with Mapbox truck routing and FMCSA Clearinghouse on the roadmap

Corvia compliance reports: carrier filing expirations plus DQ file, Clearinghouse, drug testing, and vehicle compliance report generation

Maintenance Ops

Internal tool · in daily use

A zero-install fleet maintenance platform that pulls live from the Whip Around API and refreshes hourly. It replaced four manual morning reports and about 30 minutes of daily work, and unlike a morning report, it stays current all day. A single HTML file: no server, no install, no data leaving the machine.

My role: product design, domain modeling, specification, vendor coordination, and validation against real data.

  • Live API integration, built after I identified gaps in the vendor's API (work-order creation dates, custom statuses, inspection form names) and got the missing fields added
  • Work-order pipeline with aging alerts, plus a cross-check that flags failed PMs that never got a work order
  • Quarterly PM tracking for company units and customer equipment, plus annual inspection and registration expirations for every asset
  • Daily DVIR exception tracking: missed truck and trailer inspections, failed inspections that weren't reported to maintenance, and late closes, with a valid / resolved / pending / disregard call on each
  • Rolling seven-day start-of-shift inspection grid for yard equipment, with out-of-service tracking
  • On-demand reports and a one-click email summary, generated from live data instead of a stale morning snapshot
  • Validated in a parallel run against the manual reports before switching over; API key stored only on the user's machine
  • Next step: combining with the Dispatch Operations Platform into one operations system

Maintenance Ops DVIR exceptions: missing trailer inspections, failed inspections with reported-to-maintenance status, late closes, and a seven-day yard equipment inspection grid

Dispatch Operations Platform

In development · in review with leadership

A centralized dispatch and compliance system designed to replace a seven-tab Excel workbook used by a trucking dispatch department. The spreadsheet worked, but any user could edit any field, no changes were logged, and information didn't cross departments — driver availability entered by dispatchers never reached compliance, which is how I found the problem in my own reporting.

My role: product design, domain modeling, specification, and iteration.

  • Role-based permissions across admin, manager, and dispatcher views — dispatchers see availability status only, compliance records stay restricted
  • Audit trail writing an entry per save, replacing a workbook with no change history
  • Driver roster with carrier assignment, HOS clocks, seven-day violation tracking from Samsara, and conflict detection; load reports imported from Aljex
  • Onboarding and recruiting pipeline — new-driver review queue, paperwork tracking, and the follow-up items that outlast onboarding
  • Absorbed the earlier HOS Board, which merges hours-of-service reports from Samsara and Aljex and cut a 20–30 minute daily task to 5 minutes
  • Delivery exception tracking plus reporting filterable by date range and carrier
  • Account and access management covering non-driver staff alongside the driver roster
  • Consolidates dispatch, HOS, onboarding, and compliance into one board so every department works from the same information
  • Next step in development: Samsara API integration for live HOS data, replacing the current manual morning export

CodeWorld

Prototype · in development

A gamified coding platform for ages 10–14 that teaches real code — Python, then HTML/CSS, then JavaScript — not drag-and-drop puzzle pieces. Students finish by building a four-page interactive web app of their own.

  • 14-chapter curriculum with three "Mini Boss" checkpoint challenges; every chapter project feeds into the final capstone, so nothing kids build is throwaway
  • Deliberate scaffolding progression: drag-and-drop pieces through guided typing to fully independent coding, with kid-friendly error names mapped to real Python errors
  • Themed "Worlds" (animal sanctuary, superhero HQ, and more) and a guide character, Vari, who evolves alongside the student
  • Built an SVG character rig with pose and expression controls for producing Vari's art — playtesting turned it into an in-game toy where kids pose Vari and export PNGs into their own projects, giving them free characters and the game organic brand reach
  • Chapters 1–5 and the first Mini Boss are prototyped and playtested with kids

The Village

Open source

A co-parenting coordination app built as my Harvard CS50x final project.

  • Group-based sharing: calendars, bill tracking, discussion board, file and photo sharing, private notes
  • Authentication, session management, and database schema implemented from scratch
  • Timestamped, append-only records — designed for families who may need documentation
  • Role support with group admins, plus password-protected group joining

Anu's Indian Bar & Grill

Client-style build

A single-page restaurant website designed as an unsolicited proposal for an Indian bar and grill in Humble, TX.

  • Tabbed, categorized menu system (popular dishes, vegetarian, meats, kebabs) built in vanilla JavaScript
  • Custom typographic design pairing serif display faces with a clean sans, plus online ordering and location/contact sections
  • Lightweight single-file build — no frameworks, fast load

HTML · CSS · JavaScript

About

I started building software to solve problems in front of me: training materials I wished existed, and reporting work in fleet operations that consumed hours of my day. Those projects grew into NovaCore Technologies, the company through which I develop and operate my products.

A consistent theme across my work is education — training SOC analysts, teaching kids to program, helping new CDL drivers with compliance. I'm currently designing a caregiver-support platform for families managing dementia.

How I work: my strength is architecture and domain knowledge — modeling how a system should behave, writing the specifications, designing the data relationships and integrations, and reviewing implementations against them. I write and maintain the code as well, working in standard code editors along with AI development tools. The domain knowledge behind these products — DOT compliance, security operations, instructional design — comes from my own work experience in those fields.
